The National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting Act 2007 (NGER Act) establishes a national framework for Australian corporations to report greenhouse emissions, reductions, removals and offsets and energy consumption.

The Act makes it mandatory for Australian corporations which exceed certain thresholds to report annually on their greenhouse gas emissions, energy consumption and energy production.

The reporting system is expected to cover up to 1000 medium and large companies, of which around 300 will be reporting for the first time.

From 1 July 2008, all controlling corporations must apply for registration with the Greenhouse and Energy Data Officer if their corporate group emits greenhouse gasses or produces or consumes energy at or above the specified thresholds for a financial reporting year.
