Professional Background

Appointed a partner in the Taxation Division in 1990, Ian joined the firm after a number of years experience as a Tutor/Lecturer in the Department of Accounting and Business Law at the University of Melbourne .

Ian has extensive experience in a wide range of technical areas, but has a strong specialisation in the taxation issues affecting trust structures, both publicly and privately owned.

Ian regularly advises on the taxation implications of complex transactions including corporate restructures, mergers and acquisitions, divestments and cross border dealings. He consults to clients in a diverse range of industries including property and funds management, manufacturing and publishing. Ian's client base includes large and complex high net wealth private groups and listed companies and trusts and he is frequently called on to provide specialist advice to other accounting and legal firms on complex taxation issues.

Ian is a very active member of the tax profession and is intimately involved in ongoing reforms (both legislative and administrative) relating the taxation of trusts.  Ian is a current member of the National Tax Liaison Group Trust Subcommittee and actively consults to the Government and ATO on issues relating to the taxation of trusts. 

Ian is charged with the responsibility of ensuring that the technical standards of taxation knowledge within the firm are leading edge and actively participates in consultation with Treasury in relation to new or proposed tax legislation affecting the firm's client base.
