2019-20 Federal Budget Report: Disaster Relief

The Government has announced measures to address recent natural disaster events.


What was announced

  • North Queensland Flood Recovery Package and Fassifern Valley, Queensland storms – income tax exemption
  • Assistance for Farmers and Farm Communities in drought
  • Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal – storm recovery

North Queensland Flood Recovery Package – income tax exemption

Income tax exemption provided for qualifying grants made to primary producers, small businesses and non-profit organisations affected by the North Queensland floods. 

Applies to grants relating to floods occurring between 25 January 2019 to February 2019.

Fassifern Valley, Queensland storms – income tax exemption

Income payments to primary producers in the Fassifern Valley, Queensland affected by storm damage in October 2018 will be exempt for income tax purposes.

Assistance for Farmers and Farm Communities in drought – additional funding

The Government will provide an additional $20.2 million over two years to support famers and farming communities in drought, $15 million through the Drought Communities Programme to deliver local infrastructure and drought-relief projects in a further fifteen drought-affected councils and $5 million for the Country Women’s Association of Australia to provide assistance to drought-affected communities.

Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal – storm recovery

The Government will provide $1.0 million to the Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal for clean-up and recovery payments to primary producers experiencing hardship as a result of storm damage in the Fassifern Valley, Queensland.
